Thread and component matching requires matching the nut with a bolt of the same thread size (for example, an M12 nut should be used with an M12 bolt) and ensuring the bolt has a pre-drilled hole to accommodate the cotter pin; installation involves tightening the nut to the required torque, aligning the slots on the nut with the hole in the bolt, inserting the cotter pin through both the slots and the bolt hole, and then bending the ends of the pin to lock the nut in place; material and environment considerations include that carbon steel nuts with white or blue zinc plating are suitable for dry and general environments, stainless steel alternatives can be considered for humid or mildly corrosive settings, and the zinc plating should be regularly inspected—if there are scratches, they should be repaired using zinc-rich paint to maintain rust protection.
